Habitat: 200 to 1,700 m. Elev.

Etymology: The conspicuous leaf spines of this species gave rise to its name, from the Latin serratus, meaning "serrate" or having sharp teeth like a saw directed toward the apex.

Phenology: flowers in January and February.
