Etymology: North American botanist Gregory K. Brown of the University of Wyoming is a highly regarded scientist in the field of phylogeny applied to the systematics of the Bromeliaceae. Dr. Brown has directed his various research interests towards topics of immediate applicability for science in Brazil. As one of the collectors of Neoregelia brownii, this species is named in honor of Dr. Brown.
