Klotzsch in Link, Klotzsch & Otto, Ic. pl. rar. 1(2): 21. 15-21 Nov 1840 (‘1841’). Currently recognized as a monospecific genus in the subfam. Bromelioideae. From the Greek akanthos, a prickly plant, and stachys, spike.
