DISCUSSION
Neoregelia azevedoi is one of the most ornamental species of this subgenus. Its beautiful leaves with irregular dark red crossbands are paralleled only by those of N. rubrovittata. Neoregelia brigadeirensis is this species' closest relative in terms of morphology, from which N. azevedoi differs in leaf color, strictly epiphytic habit, shorter stolons and shorter leaf blades, smaller more shortly connate sepals with an obtuse apex, and antepatalous filaments higher adnate to the petals than the antesepalous ones.
Neoregelia azevedoi has still not been collected in official conservation units —SeeLeme 1998
