plant stoloniferous; stolons 6–14 cm long, 4 mm in diameter, round in cross section, covered by green soon dry, polystichous sheaths, exceeding the internodes. leaves about 5 in each rosette, to 18 cm long, densely cinereous-lepidote throughout but soon glabrous; sheath elliptic, ample, 3–5 cm long, entire; blade spreading to recurved, linear, attenuate, 10–14 mm wide, laxly serrate with retrorse dark 2 mm long spines. inflorescence 2-flowered, simple or depauperately compound; floral bracts elliptic, apiculate, equaling the sepals, lepidote. flowers: sepals distinctly asymmetric, 10 mm long, connate by 2 mm, lepidote; petals blades obovate, acute; petals* scales larger than the stamens, ligulate, apically undulate. pistil: ovary cylindric; stigma convolute-blade, with stigmatic glandulose surface apically. fruits 4.6 cm long; seeds 17–23.
