13802 - Bromeliads (Wild) - 2018-03-24 (Dimension: 1364 x 2050 pixels - Counter: 10690) Tillandsia oroyensis Locality: Ecuador, Azuay Province - Not far from Banos (Cuenca) on road to Soldados at an elevation of 2800 meters. Also the last picture of one with seed pods is from 2900 meters 6.5 km south of Cumbe on Hwy 35 growing as a terrestrial on a rock hillside. Photographer: Jerry Raack Note: This species appears from pictures posted elsewhere on Flora-Pix to be extremely variable. The only form I have seen in Ecuador is depicted in these photos. A very attractive small to medium species. Note near Banos, this plant grows on Eucalyptus trees along the banks of the Rio Yanuncay. Growing along with it on these trees is Racinaea pugiformis and Tillandsia walteri. My experience has been that Eucalyptus make an extremely poor host for epiphytes. Also note that the 23 spikes with their primary bracts in the first picture appear to be yellow, but that is not true, they are a light brown having already dried in the sun, and they have seed pods. The spikes are really yellowish red with red bracts before and during anthesis. I have no pictures of the flowers to include here but they should be bright purple. Also note that the description in the Encylopedia says that even the lower primary bracts are shorter than the spikes, but that is not true in the first 2 pictures I have included here where the bracts exceed the spikes on the lower portion.
