Distribution: URUGUAY: Treinta y Tres

Habitat: epilithic, forming subdense, grayish clumps that grow fully sun exposed, on vertical rocky surfaces associated to water courses, in areas of hillside forest or scrublands img

Etymology: The epithet of the new subspecies refers to the larger size of the petals when compared with those in the typical subspecies.

Phenology: Tillandsia bandensis subsp. grandipetala flowers mainly in December and sometimes in late November or early January. Plants with unopened fruits were observed from late December to early September and seed dispersal in winter, from June to early September.
