Distribution: BRAZIL; Rio de Janeiro, county of Sumidouro, close to Nova Friburgo,

Habitat: in vertical rocky escarpments surrounded by Atlantic Forest., 800 to 1,000 m. Elev.

Etymology: Vriesea gastiniana honors one of its collectors, Jorge Gastin, bromeliad grower from Nova Friburgo, Rio de Janeiro, who has supported some of the investigations in these hard-to-reach lithophytic Vriesea and Tillandsia populations by means of his fine rock climbing technique.
