Etymology: The specific epithet of this species honors the indigenous group Nukak, one of the last nomadic groups on earth. The Nukak are people that learned how to use their natural surroundings and depend on the resources provided by the forest and savannas they inhabit. Since their contact with outsiders and the Western culture, their population has decreased mainly due to diseases previously unknown to them. For this reason, the Colombian government declared their main area of presence as the National Natural Reserve Nukak to ensure their protection. Steyerbromelia nukakii occurs exclusively in this territory.
