Distribution: BRAZIL; Minas Gerais

Habitat: usually saxiculous, sometimes as terrestrial in sandy soils or seldom as an accidental epiphyte, ca. 1195 m. Elev.

Etymology: The epithet of V. portentosa came from the Latin word “portentosus”, meaning “portentous”, “prodigious”, “wonderful” or “monstrous”, as a reference to its huge and showy stature when in bloom.
