Distribution: MEXICO; Oaxaca near San Mateo Penasco, growing with Tillandsia aff. juncea (Ruiz & Pavon) Poiret, and orchids.
Habitat: Saxicolous on steep rock cliffs,, 1700 m. Elev.
Etymology: Due to the nearly black petals the plant is named Tillandsia atroviolacea.
