Distribution: Alcantarea vinicolor is a heliophile and occurs in rocky outcrops in the region of Vargem Alta and the District of Pedra Azul, municipality of Domingos Martins. It is protected in Parque Estadual da Pedra Azul. Locally, it is removed from the habitat to be used in home gardens. Widely cultivated in different countries.

Etymology: vinicolor, i.e. colour of burgundy, making allusion to the colouring of the leaves.

Phenology: Collected in flower in cultivation in June and August. Ripe fruits collected in December.
