Etymology: This species is named in honor of the Benedictine Monk Bento Jose Pickel the pioneer in botanical systematics in Pernambuco state, who acted as a botany teacher at the Escola de Agricultura de Tapera, (Agricultural school) Pernambuco, from 1914 to 1936. Later, without abandoning his teaching profession, he entered the Servico Florestal do Estado de Sao Paulo, (Forestry Service of the State of Sao Paulo) where he retired in 1960 (Hilbers, 1994 ).

Phenology: Canistrum pickelii flowers between November and January, during the dry season, and its fruits are dispersed by passeriform birds.
