Type Billbergia speciosa Thunb., Pl. bras. 3: 30. 23 Mai 1821. Currently recognized in the subfam. Bromelioideae. Named in honor of Swedish ‘Kammarrättsråd’ [judge], botanist, and zoologist Gustaf Johann Billberg (1772-1844). "Nomen dare voluit, deditque illustr. Praefes in honorem Botanici longe Celeberrimi, Florae Svecicae elegantissimae jam Auctoris mentissimi, Domini Gust. Johan Billberg. Confiliarii Camerae Rationalis dig nissimi et Equitis de Stella polari splendidissimi.” [Wished to give the name in honor of the most well known botanist, the most wise author of the elegant Flora of Sweden, Master Gust. Johan Billberg. Brothers [Thunberg and Billberg] of the Chamber of Reason, and Knight of the most splendid Polar Star.]
