Etymology: Nidularium ferdinando-coburgii was named in honor of Prince Ferdinand von Sachsen-Coburg, the youngest brother ofPrince August, son-in-law of the Brazilian Emperor, Dom Pedro II. In 1879, Prince Ferdinand and his brother, Augustus participated in Heinrich Wawra 's third expedition to Brazil. Wawra (1831-1887) visited Brazil for the first time in 1857 aboard the corvette "Carolina " and again in 1860 on the steamer "Elizabeth ". Known for his special botanical accomplishments, Wawra, the "Chevalier of Fernsee", held the post of medical offlcer (major) of the Royal Squadron of Vienna, and was later a member of the court of Emperor Maximilien (Morren, 1881 )
