Distribution: COSTA RICA: Cartago, San José
Habitat: epiphyte on the trunks and lower branches of trees in forested areas, 1300 - 2200 m. Elev.
Etymology: The specific epithet “picadoi” honors the Costa Rican scientist Clodomiro Picado Twight (1887– 1944), in recognition of his outstanding contributions to science and medicine, and particularly for his pioneering ecological research on epiphytic bromeliads. His work Les Broméliacées épiphytes comme milieu biologique (Epiphytic bromeliads as biological environment) (Picado 1913) from his doctoral dissertation was one of the first studies on the biology and ecology of epiphytic bromeliads in tropical forests.
Phenology: Flowering in June, July, and August. Like W. estrellensis, anthesis occurs at night, with one to three flowers opening; fading takes place the following morning.
