Distribution: Mexico: Oaxaca

Habitat: It grows in colonies on rocky cliffs and vertical walls, or terrestrially in tropical deciduous forest and grasslands, 1810-2210 m. Elev.

Etymology: The specific epithet refers to and honours the Mixtec culture from Mexico. One of the regions occupied by the Mixtec ethnic group is located in northwestern Oaxaca, the area in which the type locality of the new species is found

Phenology: Hechtia mixtecana blooms from July to August and fruits from September to November

Hechtia mixtecana
