Habitat: lithophytic on semi-shady rocky outcrops in the leeward slopes, in mesophilous forest in transition to seasonally dry forest dominated by oak species, ca. 1280 m. Elev.
Etymology: The name zapoteca honors the Zapotecan people, an ethnic group that have traditionally inhabited the type locality area.
Phenology: Plants under cultivation have bloomed from December to February and fruit in March
