Etymology: Since the name „boliviensis“ at the species level within the genus Tillandsia is already occupied by T. boliviensis Baker, the new species will be named after its type locality, Mecapaca, Prov. of Murillo, Dpto. of La Paz, Bolivia

Phenology: Tillandsia mecapacana was found in flower in August. The flowering period likely has a longer duration since, in cultivation, flowers continued to open, with interruptions, until January of the following year
