Etymology: The name „mollepataensis“ refers to the locality of the species, the small town of Mollepata in the southernmost section of the Provincia (Prov.) of Santiago de Chuco, Dpto. of La Libertad.

Phenology: The flowering period of Tillandsia mollepataensis in its native habitat occurs in late summer there, approximately in the months of February and March.
