Type: PERU. Dpto. of Ancash: Prov. of Corongo, Distr. of Yánac, on the road to Pomabamba near the village of Yánac, on steep rocks on the northern slope of the Nevado Champará (Cordillera Blanca) between Yungay Pampa and the pass before Pasacancha, near the turnoff to Sihuas (km 22 turnoff Pomabamba), (2,800–)3,000 m a.s.l., leg. 11 March 1997, H. & L. Hromadnik HR 23141, ex cult. coll. Hromadnik, 19 July 2023 (holo WU, iso WU).

Distribution: PERU: Ancash

Habitat: Saxicolous in larger groups on smooth rock surfaces, 2800–3000 m. Elev.

Etymology: Tillandsia champaraensis is named after the type locality Nevado Champará, the northernmost peak of the Cordillera Blanca.
