Distribution: Mexico: Durango, Estado de México, Guerrero, Michoacán, Morelos, Nayarit, Oaxaca
Habitat: epiphytes, in thorny scrub, deciduous oak and pine-oak forest, mainly in subhumid temperate and warm areas, as well as arid areas, 5–2450 m. Elev.
Etymology: Tillandsia makoyana was named in honor of botanist and horticulturist Lambert Jacob-Makoy (1790–1873), owner of the plant from which the illustration that represents the holotype was prepared.
Phenology: Flowering occurs between December and July, with some reports for September, October, and November. Fruiting occurs between March and May, and between July and January.
