Puya loca Madriñán |
Habitat: only in paramos with high rocky cliffs, 2250-3550 m. Elev.
Etymology: the species name honors the 'puya loca', the Colombian Caribbean folk song composed by Diofante Jiménez Robles, of the joint 'Cumbia Soledena' folk, which is interpreted to the beat of the 'Puya', a subgenus of Cumbia music characterized by its fast pace and jocular. Specifically, the epithet comes from the feminine adjective ‘crazy’, used sometimes as synonymous with eccentric, and which relates to the unusual colour of its flowers.
Phenology: flowers in the rainy season, between the months of November and December. Among the other species reported for the region (Betancur, 2000), only Puya nitida and Puya santosii flower in synchrony with Puya loca.
