Etymology: When N amazonicum was published in 1886, it was erroneously thought to have come from the " Amazon Valley" in northern Brazil and this was what inspired the name of this typical Atlantic-forest inhabitant from southern and southeastern Brazil.

Phenology: It flowers from February to April
