Type: Mexico. Chihuahua: Mpio. de Batopilas, 13 km antes de llegar a Batopilas, viniendo de La Bufa, 27o06'28"N, 107o40'18"W, 695 m, talud en selva baja caducifolia, florecida en cultivo en junio 2007, I. Ramı́rez & G. Carnevali 1527 (holotype, CICY [/]; isotypes, MO [/], UAMIZ [/]).

Distribution: MEXICO; Chihuahua

Habitat: lithophytes on exposed, sheer cliffs in low caducifolious forest and oak-pine forest, forming small colonies of one to four rosettes, 695-1570 m. Elev.

Etymology: The specific epithet refers to the fact that the leaves of Hechtia edulis are eaten by the Tarahumara people (fide Bye 8855).
