Mez described Fascicularia merely as an afterthought in a text portion of the monograph on the geography of the Bromeliaceae: “Fascicularia nov. gen. in Rhodostachya bicolor, littoralis, pitcairniifolia conditum, petalis ligulatis pollineque insignis.” [The new genus Fascicularia is based on Rhodostachya bicolor, littoralis, and pitcairniifolia by its conspicuous ligulate petals and pollen.] Currently recognized in the subfam. Bromelioideae. From the Latin, fasciculus, fascicle, referring to the disposition of the flowers.
