Distribution: BRAZIL; Bahia,

Habitat: an epiphyte or an occasional sand dweller, 50 m. Elev.

Etymology: This species was named in honor of its collector, North American Mulford E. Foster (1888-1978), who helped make bromeliads a household word in the United States. He was president of the Bromeliad Society, Inc., from 1950 to 1959, filling in as editor from 1951 to 1958. He made several trips to Brazil and took back many new species which were described by botanist Lyman B. Smith. Many of these plants carry his name.
