Etymology: This new species belongs to the so-called "southern Bahia complex" of Aechmea, made up of A. echinata (Leme) Leme, A. weberi (E. Pereira & Leme) Leme, A. paradoxa (Leme) Leme, and A. mollis L. B. Sm. (Leme 1997), forming an important conceptual bridge between Aechmea and Canistrum subgen. Canistrum, which explains the chosen name A. marginalis.
