The well-known bromeliad specialist, Rudolf Wulfinghoff; collected a plant on one of his journeys to Ecuador, which was immediately recognised as a new species by Frank Hase. It would be recollected on subsequent trips to the natural growing locality between Gualaceo and Chiguinda. He planned to publish it as a new species and to name it after its discoverer, but a severe illness and his sudden death precluded this. To date, the new species is only known from two localities and vouchers exist only from the type locality. —SeeDie Bromelie
