- Distribution and conservation: The new species has a peculiar geographical distribution, it comes from the most western limit for the genus Canistrum, whose species concentrate in the dense forest as shade lovers. The occurrence of some taxa of Bromeliaceae, typical of the coastal forests, in isolated brushwoods in rupestral fields on the eastern slopes of the Serra do Espinhaco was observed by Versieux & Wendt (2007). These authors discussed this distribution as being related to the western limit of the Atlantic forest in the broad sense and the connnections between the brushwood forests and the gallery forests. Although included in the domain of the rupestral fields, the atmosphere where the new species grows, has a microclimate distinctly more humid, which probably explains its occurrence more inland, in relation to the other taxa of this genus.
The species forms extensive populations in the sub forest, in brushwood mountain forests which are seasonal semideciduous, in the states of Bahia and Minas Gerais, growing as epiphytes, rupicoles or terrestrial. It is in a certain way protected by occurring in Parque Estadual do Rio Preto in Minas Gerais. Probably the species also occurs in the Parque Nacional da Chapada Diamantina and in similar areas that have not yet been sampled.
