- Aechmea heterosepala was found growing epiphytically or terrestrially in montane Atlantic forest of Bahia state, which is extremely rich in species diversity and high in endemism. Examples of the richness of the area are Canistrum montanum Leme, Neoregelia kerryi Leme and Portea nana Leme & H. Luther, which were originally collected in the same area. —See Leme 2010a
