- Racinaea marioportillae, a striking new species from Ecuador
On the last day of his trip to Ecuador in 2002, Frank Hase was brought plants of an unknown Racinaea by the Ecuadorian orchid and bromeliad specialist, Mario Portilla. Unfortunately, there was no time left to visit the collecting locality.
During the following trip in November 2003, F. Hase was able to recollect the new Racinaea. He wanted to describe and publish it as a new species and dedicate it to Mario, the discoverer and his friend. A severe disease and eventually the death of F. Hase curtailed these plans. Therefore, this wish is fulfilled herein. Despite intensive fieldwork promoted in the last years in Ecuador, the plant is known only from the type locality. —See Die Bromelie
