Taxonomic Change:
- Considered a synonym of Pitcairnia lanuginosa Ruiz & Pav. —See Smith & Downs 1974
- Considered a species to its own right. Despite their close similarity, the taxon that occurs in the Bolivian Chaco (P. lanuginosa) is more robust than the taxon in the Cerrado (P. burchellii). —See Saraiva et al. 2015 p. 732
