- Distribution & Habitat
Nidularium bicolor grows in the states of Espirito Santo (where the type was tound) and Rio de Janeiro, but it is much more abundant in Minas Gerais, where most of the collections are concentrated. In the first two states, the collection sites are never very far from the Minas Gerais border. Its range does not overlap with that of N. fulgens which is restricted to the coastal forests of Rio de Janeiro, nor with that of N. ferrugineum, known only from the northern most sector of Espirito Santo. There is a certain sympatry between N. ferdinando-coburgii and N. bicolor in the Ibitipoca area, in Rio de Janeiro This area is an important confluence of Atlantic forest bromeliad floras from the Serra do Mar and Serra da Mantiqueira, and even N. marigoi, a species typical of the Itatiaia region, is found here.
Nidularium bicolor is found at altitudes of 500 to 1,500 m (2,000 m for the type collection) and is most common in flooded forests along rivers and streams. In fact, it was by following the route of the gallery forests that N. bicolor reached the Cerrado Domain in preserved areas such as Ibitipoca and Caraca, Minas Gerais.
There are many clones of this species in cultivation —See Leme 2000a
