OBSERVATIONS. P. dodsonii is very common in the Amazonian region where it forms large colonies united by long stolons, which can exceed 50 cm. The base of the stem is triangular, a uncommon characteristic in the genus Pitcairnia. The fruits open from the base like in P. costata, and the seeds are spread by birds.
The form of the seeds, conical with a gelatinous covering, does not relate this species to the subgenus Pepinia nor Pitcairnia. The flowers have pilose sepals, like P. echinata, but P. dodsonii has entire leaf margins. When the inflorescence is mature, the sepals become smooth losing the pilose covering. p. Bromel Ecuador
