We are growing the clonotype of Tillandsia guelzii and I'm expecting this being a hybrid, because it starts polystichously flowering in the first few flowers and then distichously. Rauh suggest it is from Jujuy, but he is not certain about that.
Has it ever been found afterward?
Obviously Tillandsia pucaraensis Ehlers is the same species or hybrid as T.guelzii and was found near Pucara N.Peru (or are labels exchanged here?). Has it ever been re-found?
The plants from Heidelberg are traveling around the world, just because it is a strong grower (see also Derek's file below) and today I disected a specimen that we got from Jurgen Lautner (GOET) with the name Tillandsia pucaraensis (1989). As Derek's file suggest is that this name has priority over T.guelzii (1988), but I think it is the other way around.
Interestingly the inflorescence looks odd, because of the polystichous-distichous spike. But in the plant I examined today I found some thing I have never seen before. Between the floral bract and the flowers there are small bract like structures on both sides of the flowers and sometimes more than two (all 15 flowers I examined). For me this is pointing in the direction of a disturbance of the early development of the inflorescence and I have to re-examine the plants that we got from Heidelberg. Also the geniculate rachis, becoming visible in a late stage of flowering (last flowers open) is something I see in other hybrids.
