T.gutteana Weber was placed in synonymy of this species by Kiff, but there are several flower and vegetative differences that justify T.gutteana to be a distinctive species. Vegetatively there is no similarity to the short leaved and long caulescent type variety of T.macbrideana, the indument and coloration is very different. The most important differences in the flower are the sepals, which are larger, longer connate and acutish in T.gutteana and rounded in T.macbrideana. The stigma is very narrow (less wide than the style), erect and exceeded by the stamens in T.gutteana vs. broader, divergent and exceeding the stamens in T.macbrideana. (Note: EG)
