Orthophytum grossiorum was found living in concentrated organic accumulations with clumps of small cactus on superficial rocky declines, at the base of geological formations of the type "Pao-de-Aqucar", to 254 m altitude. It adapts solely on rocks in the domain of the Atlantic forest, O. grossiorum develops small and scattered colonies, under direct sunlight. The intense contrast of colors of their red-ferrugineous leaves and their yellow floral bracts and still more accentuated by the blackened granite at the base. Among the sympatric species of Bromeliaceae observed at the place of collection, it is worth mentioning great populations of Encholirium horridum L. B. Sm. and Alcantarea sp. —SeeVidalia, Revista da
