- DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT
Canistropsis microps is endemic to south central Rio de Janeiro state extending across the Sao Paulo border to the region around Ubatuba. The occurrence of a lone specimen (Reitz 6039) in Santa Catarina appears to be a case of mistaken records because the taxon was never again found in this state, despite intense collecting activity by botanists over the past 40 years, including bromeliad specialist Raulino Reitz himself (1919-1990). Furthermore, C. microps is usually very common in its habitat, forming rather extensive populations in the Atlantic forest understory at altitudes of 50 to 1,000 m. It forms tufts of 20 or more individuals on rocks and tree trunks.
It is relatively well preserved in several conservation units, such as the Poco das Antas Biological Reserve, created to protect the golden lion tamarin, Tijuca National Park, Praia do Sul Biological Reserve and Bocaina National Park.
