Canistropsis billbergioides f. azurea is endemic to areas that range from sea level to the foothills of the mountains, mainly in the region of Angra dos Reis and Parati, on the southern coast of Rio de Janeiro state. The habit of this species is similar to that of the type form and of the other species in this genus. Like C. pulcherrima, it grows in an area where habitat destruction is going full force. It flowers from July to December and has not been collected in any conservation unit. Ex situ preservation is represented by three or four different clones introduced to horticulture. The future of this taxon in the wild will soon copy that of C. microps f. bicensis. —SeeLeme 1998
