Field research in the Bromeliaceae for the state of Bahia reveals that there are several endemic or nearly endemic species complexes of Aechmea in the broad sense. One, described by Leme as the "southern Bahia complex" (Leme 1997a, Leme 2000) bridges the gap between Aechmea and Canistrum. The following two taxa are members of another assemblage, not quite endemic, treated most recently in the journal in a review of Aechmea bicolor (Leme 1997b). —SeeJ. Bromeliad Soc.
