- Notes from Holst in Flora Venez. Guayana 1997
The type collection of Pitcairnia caricifolia var. macrantha L.B. Sm. matches the type description and other material previously identified as P. rubiginosa var. amazonica from southwestern Amazonas. However, without having studied the_type of variety amazonica, it is unclear which name best applies to these populations, or even if variety amazonica should be allied with P. rubiginosa at all.
An additional collection, Aymard et al. 3543 (PORT), from near San Carlos de Rio Negro, appears to be related to the abovementioned collections, but has a more densely flowered inflorescence, and the constricted, petiolar portion is relatively broad and spiny. This may represent an additional taxon, but more material is needed. p. Flora of Venezuelan Guayana
