Distribution & Habitat
Nidularium jonesianum is found mainly in the states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, with only one record for Sao Paulo. This species, together with N. innocentii, has the southernmost range of the genus, to Santo Antonio da Patrulha municipality. in Rio Grande do Sul. As mentioned by Reitz (1983), there is a sharp decrease in the number of species along a north-south axis in Santa Catarina state. The range of most species stops short of the so-called "Torres gateway" at the border between Santa Catarina and Rio
Grande do Sul. According to this same author, the Serra do Tijucas and Serra do Tabuleiro, together with a decrease in rainfall also from north to south along the coast, form a natural barrier to the distribution of these bromeliads. Of the 114 species known from Santa Catarina at that time near the border with Parana, only 41 extend their range all the way down to the Torres gateway on the border with Rio Grande do Sul.
Living in the lower layer of the coastal Atlantic torest up to 800 m altitude, N. jonesianum forms small populations on rocks or on the basal portion of tree trunks in the forest understory. . There are about five distinct clones in cultivation. —SeeLeme 2000a
