A CLARIFICATION OF CRYPTANTHUS MARITIMUS
by Harry E. Luther , Curator of Bromeliaceae; Director, BIC Sarasota, Florida in Crypt Soc Journ 3(2): 11-4. 1988
I have examined two living collections porported to be Cryptanthus maritimus. I thank Marilyn's Garden (SEL 87-106) and New World Bromeliads (SEL 88-23) for providing these plants for the research collection of the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. These cultivated plants appear to be C. maritimus but differ in several characteristics that make keying them from the Flora Neotropica treatment uncertain. As it is reasonable to assume that the horticultural material is of the same origin as the type and only known collection, this species exhibits more variation in vegetative characters than was originally thought. The description of C. maritimus should be amended to include the following notes. —SeeSmith & Downs 1979
