Only the type collections and a cultivated specimen of this taxon have been studied.
The description was made with the material indicated.
This variety is distinguished from var. eleutheropetala by its triangular foliar blades, whitish beneath, and dark red inner leaves.
Some specimens have shown red sepals in fruit. This variety can be cultivated the same way as the other variety and it grows very well.
The large size of the leaves and the stiff spines, as well as the size of the rosettes, make this species very unmanageable for horticultural purposes.
