Ronnbergia campanulata Gilmartin & H.Luther. J. Bromeliad Soc. 40: 206, fig. 7 (1990). Ronnbergia campanulata was discovered in 1972 by Bruce MacBryde in one of his expeditions to Cordillera del Condor in the border between Ecuador and Peru. Eighteen years later, Gilmartin & Luther (1990) described this species, noting its dark blue floral bracts and sepals and campanulate-turbinate calyx as characters that had never been seen before in other species of Ronnbergia. Since its discovery, R. campanulata had not been collected outside of the Cordillera del Condor and its adjacent mountain ranges (e.g. Cordillera de Huaracayo), where it was believed to be a narrow endemic. However, expeditions in 2015 and 2017 to Munchique National Park in southwestern Colombia resulted in the unexpected collection —SeeAguirre-Santoro & Betancur 2021p. 10
