Comments:

• The type specimen of C. werkleana sensu Mez (1904) corresponds to an unusually large plant, with floral and fruit characteristics similar to those of C. sessiliflora (see Huft, 1986). A few additional collections of similar plants with comparatively large leaves, and variably long stipitate spikes have been collected in s. Mexico. The presence of occasional populations with similar characteristics to those of C. sessilif1ora, and the possibility of ecological modications of leaf size, do not support the maintenance of C. werckleana as a separate species. —See Palaci 1997
