- Geographical Distribution: Exclusive to the Atlantic Forest Domain, principally in southeast Brazil. Vriesea flammea is the most abundant species of the group studied here, and has the broadest geographical distribution, occurring from southeast Pernambuco to northeast Rio Grande do Sul, in Torres ( Fig. 2b ). Vriesea flammea is included in the list of threatened species in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, as “Endangered,” which is probably an error, because although the species is rare in the state it is not threatened with extinction. This distortion of data is probably a result of the many terms and parameters used as criteria by the IUCN, which in many cases are subjective and open to differing interpretations ( Robbirt et al. 2006 ); therefore we can also suggest the possibility that this lapse occurred through mistaken application of the IUCN criteria.
Conservation: B2 Least Concern (LC). —See Silva & Costa 2011
