Lindley (1843) described Pitcairnia micrantha Lindl. as being imported from Rio (which most likely means Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) - but this does not necessarily imply, that the plant was collected in Brazil. SMITH (1934 b) had already noticed, that a Brazilian origin of the type was very unlikely in view of subsequent collections.
Concerning the type locality of Cottendorfia neogranatensis Baker, the original description only says ‘New Granada’, without further locality (BAKER 1889). The term New Granada may refer to various former national denominations formed by the present day nations of Colombia and Panama, as well as smaller portions of Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Guayana, Trinidad and Tobago - therefore it is difficult to trace, where the plant actually comes from. Furthermore, New Granada may also mean Nueva Granada, which is a municipality in the Usultan Department of El Salvador. Mez (1934) stated without further explanation that the type comes from the same region like Reiche's collection: Mexico, Departamento Oaxaca, Sierra Madre, Rio Tanetze, Reiche 566a, Mar./Apr. 1927 [M]. In view of the fact, that C. Jurgensen is known for his great collection efforts in Mexico (Chaudhri et al. 1972), it seems most likely, that the type comes from there.
The city of Ahuachapan, next to the type locality of Lindmania flaccida Standl., is situated approx. at 13° 55'N, 89° 51'W.
Fosterella micrantha (Lindl.) L.B. Sm. is the type species of the genus Fosterella L.B. Sm. —See Peters 2009
