According to A. J. Gilmartin, the flowers of Tillandsia secunda are heterostylous with one type having exserted styles and included stamens and the other the reverse. She would classify this species under subgenus Tillandsia but I feel that it is rather Allardtia. In either case it is a very aberrant development and so far as I know the only case of heterostyly in the family. —SeeSmith & Downs 1977
